Ottawa 2011

In August 2011, the Canadian Canoe Foundation (CCF) collaborated with Ottawa Riverkeeper (ORK), Canadian Geographic, Canadian Voyageur Adventures and Esprit Rafting on the Future Leader canoe trip learning adventure on the Ottawa River. The environmental education project took the form of an eight-day, 200 kilometre canoe trip learning adventure for 10 youth down the Ottawa River. Youth who resided in the Ottawa River Watershed (Ontario and Quebec) who were between the ages of 14 and 17 were invited to complete an online application form describing why they should be selected as a Future Leader in the effort to protect the Ottawa River Watershed. The objectives of the project were to: 1) Provide 10 youth participants with an on-the-water environmental education regarding the ecology and water quality status of the Ottawa River Watershed; 2) Conduct water quality monitoring that will feed data into Canadian Geographic's online Water Atlas; 3) Develop concrete opportunities for the Future Leaders to engage their friends, families and communities in the Ottawa Riverkeeper conservation campaigns; and 4) Raise media and public awareness of the need to better manage the Ottawa River Watershed. Canadian Canoe Foundation would like to thank all of the volunteers project funders including: EJLB Foundation, RBC Blue Water Project, Export Development Canada, Mountain Equipment Canada, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, the Ontario Trillum Foundation, Esprit Rafting and Mike Beedell Photography for their generous support of the project. ********************************************** Trip itinerary: The canoe trip departed from Rapides des Joachims in Québec on the morning of August 13th, and ended at Portage-du-Fort in Québec on August 20th.
